Sisters painting by Hans Heyerdahl in the National Gallery at Oslo, Norway, in September 1994

In the National Gallery we see this Sisters painting by Hans Heyerdahl.

Since I have little advance notice about this conference, we have no chance to learn any Norwegian ahead of time. This is our first experience getting along in a country where we cannot speak the language, and it works out just fine. At one point we are at a bus stop and a native comes by and asks us in English if we are waiting for the bus. We say yes, and he says the bus is not running. We ask how he knows this, and he says that's what the sign above our heads says. At another point we are buying treats at a streetside store and wind up communicating okay by pointing at what we want and indicating the number with our fingers.
