Spotted Cort (Cortinarius iodes) in August on Mount Wallingford near Weare in southern New Hampshire

Near the top of Mount Wallingford Dick finds this neat purple mushroom. It is a Spotted Cort (Cortinarius iodes), so called for the little white dots on its top. It is also called Viscid Violet Cort for its slimy purple appearance. The color fades with age becoming lighter violet (and less outstanding!).
