Red Trillium (Trillium erectum) in May on Stinson Mountain in New Hampshire

At trailside a Red Trillium (Trillium erectum) nods in late-afternoon sunlight. This plant is also called Purple Trillium, Wake Robin and Stinking Benjamin. The last name is a reference to its foul smell, used to attract carrion flies for pollination.
