Dye Maker's Polypore (Phaeolus schweinitzii)

Along the unbeaten path is Dye Maker's Polypore (Phaeolus schweinitzii), also called Velvet-top Fungus. This bracket fungus is big (8 inches) and fruits on ground from buried conifer roots. It is used to dye wool a soft tan color, hence the common name.
