Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina) in September on Norwottuck Rail Trail near Northampton in northern Massachusetts

Crossing the trail is a Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina). He is big (the shell is about 16 inches long); and he hasn't been out of the water long (with a wet muddy top, including a crawling slug),
