Smoke Tree (Cotinus coggygria)

Smoke Tree (Cotinus coggygria) has pink-hairy flower stems that continue to grow after the flowers are spent, eventually creating huge plumes that resemble smoke (hence the common name of this shrub). This plume is just starting to grow: the flowers are gone and the hairy stems are expanding. The little pods are immature fruit (few because most of the flowers are sterile).
