Chain Pickerel (Esox niger) in September on the Nashua River Rail Trail in northeastern Massachusetts

In another section of the pond -- not covered in duckweed -- swims a Chain Pickerel (Esox niger). This long thin fish is distinguished by side markings that look like interlocking chains, a deeply forked tail fin, and a vertical bar under the eye.
