Because of deep late-winter snow, we found many "spruce traps" in the woods.

In this case, Bill is trapped, while the rest of us bypass his unfortunate discovery.

Spruce traps, dense woods and other bushwhacking hazards slowed our off-trail progress from 3 mph to about 1/2 mph.
