Hiking in Winter

Hiking New Hampshire's mountains in winter is such a beautifully different experience that some hikers have chosen to revisit every one of the NH 4000-foot mountains in this season. There is even a patch provided by AMC's Four Thousand Footer Club for this achievement.

Winter hiking requires special gear and has safety hazards. For more information about beauty, gear and safety, see the magazine article: Hiking New Hampshire's Mountains in Winter

Stuff to Bring:
- Boots (ankle-height and warm enough for your feet)
- Gaiters (to seal the boot top from snow)
- Hat & Gloves (water-resistant, plus overmitts if really cold)

- Waterproof/breathable jacket & pants (Goretex or similar)
- Food & Water (protected from freezing)
- Foot traction (MicroSpikes or similar)
- Snowshoes (if the snow is deep)
- Hiking poles (they really help balance)
