Gray Jay in hand on the trail to Mount Jackson in New Hampshire

Near the top of the Jackson Branch we are greeted by a Gray Jay welcoming committee. In the mid-winter dearth of mountain animals it is exciting to have a bird in hand; thanks to Tonia who braves the near-zero temperature to do this. And, yes, we tip them with granola. This Gray Jay is plumped up in cold February; see another that is slimmed down in warm September.
