Rice Button Aster (Symphyotrichum dumosum) in September at Greystone Trails in eastern Massachusetts

This small (1/2 inch) flower is Rice Button Aster (Symphyotrichum dumosum), also called Bushy Aster and Aster dumosus. Identification is aided by small leafy bracts on the flower stalks that make it appear the flowers are growing in leaf axils. This is a branching, shrubby-looking wildflower with leaves that are narrow, pointed, toothless, linear and stalkless.
