winter view of the Presidential Mountains from Owl's Head in New Hampshire

Dick, Tom and Len check the view east toward the Presidentials from the summit of Owl's Head. We collect a lot of white stuff on our packs and clothing while breaking trail through snow-covered branches on Martha's Mile. January 2004 has been unusually cold, with wind-chill approaching -100 F in the mountains. On one particularly cold day, the weatherman noted dryly that it was 30 F colder in New Hampshire (on Mount Washington) than at the South Pole! A tragedy occurred on January 15 when Kenneth Holmes -- a Monadnock Park ranger -- died of hypothermia while camping alone in the Pemigewasset Wilderness.
