American Hazelnut (Corylus americana) in bloom at Beaver Brook in southern New Hampshire

Our third in-bloom shrub is American Hazelnut (Corylus americana). This birch-looking male catkin turns yellowish with age. The female flower grows later (in the axis of the male catkin). It is small but becomes bright red. The start of a female flower is at the top of this twig. See also: fruit.
